Technology Review: The Kindle DX

As a lover of both traditional books, and cutting-edge technology, I have so far looked upon the emergent eBook readers with skepticism. And it seems I'm not the only one: it has taken some time for readers to pass into the public eye and, even then, the high price of e-paper displays means that traditional publishing won't be throwing in the towel just yet. For the most part, manufacturers of eBook readers have seemed content to cater to a small market while the necessary technology improved, but Amazon seems bent on upsetting that with the Kindle. Upon its release, the Amazon Kindle was a well-publicized sensation, selling out the first run in mere hours. In light of that,Amazon continued to develop the Kindle, culminating in the Kindle DX, which I had the pleasure of
reviewing.

And it is a pleasure to read on the Kindle. As with other e-paper-based technologies, the Kindle's display is not backlit, instead causing greyscale images to appear on the surface of the display almost as though they had been printed there. This is, of course, the major draw of any eBook reader as opposed to an iPhone or other mobile device: where LCD displays require backlighting, rapidly causing eyestrain and becoming completely useless in the sunlight, e-paper looks like ink on a page, making it much easier to read for extended periods of time. Also, like real ink, it looks so very much better under bright light.

Indeed, in many ways the Kindle demonstrates the advantages of the eBook over traditional print. For one, it is much easier and lighter to carry around several hundred books on the Kindle's 3.3 GB of internal storage. For another, it is much easier to navigate with one hand than a dead-tree book. As a frequent rider of crowded New York subway trains and buses, I found this was a welcome relief; instead of trying to turn a page with the hand holding the book, or letting go of the handrail and being thrown against the other passengers, all I had to do was press the very large and convenient “Next Page” button. The DX also includes speakers and a headphone jack, for listening to mp3s, audiobooks, and the text-to-speech converter included. The speakers are quite loud and clear, and though they default to quite a loud volume, the volume rocker on the side of the Kindle makes it easy to adjust this. I will also say that the text-to-speech module is fairly good as they come. The voices (there are two, a male and a female) actually have a naturalistic inflection pattern, and though it trips up a few times here and there, it mostly gets the feel of a sentence right, and doesn't sound too robotic – though I wouldn't trust it with reading Hamlet.

Another advantage of the Kindle DX (and others in the Kindle line) over its competitors (paperbacks included) is its access to the internet via 3G wireless. This allows you, on a whim, to access Amazon's extensive library of eBooks, as well as automatically-updating periodicals and blog feeds – though, you can only download blogs that have signed on with Amazon, instead of just plugging in an RSS feed. Still, I must say it's quite convenient to have my favorite newspapers every morning without having to dig them out of the bushes, an advantage that would become quite more acute in the winter. However, the wireless access poses a serious threat to battery life, as it stays on even when you turn the device off.

Of course, if battery life weren't enough to worry about, there is the somewhat-unsettling factor of what Amazon calls “Whispernet.” While encompassing such simple things as text-only internet access and connection to the Amazon storefront, it also includes reporting to Amazon information about the books you're reading, and what page you're on. In combination with the facts that Amazon recently deleted all copies of several books from customers' Kindles, that Amazon eBooks are heavily DRM-protected, and that Amazon continues to call your eBooks “licensed” rather than “purchased,” it becomes hard to think of the books you've placed on the Kindle as “yours.” Despite the reassurances that the reporting of book information is solely to keep your page marked between the Kindle itself and the iPhone Kindle reader application, or that they will not remove books from Kindles in the future, it's difficult not to think of Whispernet whispering your personal information in Amazon's ear.

At this point I feel compelled to point out that Amazon should consider firing their product namer. The “Kindle” and “Whispernet?” These two names call forth images of both Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 (which, in an irony to beat all ironies, was recently deleted from Kindles via Whispernet.) It takes a strange logic to think that books and fire go together, or that we should rest easy knowing that our devices are whispering our information to their manufacturer.

Names and wireless whispers aren't the only things wrong with the Kindle, unfortunately. I found the little 5-direction joystick to be difficult to manipulate, as there was not enough distinction between moving it around and pushing it in, which causes a selection, and usually a change to a different page. Also, the built-in keyboard was a pain to use. The keys were too small and positioned right on top of each other, causing many typos for someone with larger fingers like myself. Creating highlights and notes in a text is a bit of a chore: you have to click through each word between the top or bottom of the screen and where you want the note or highlight to begin. With the slow screen-refresh rate that comes with e-paper displays, trying to do this with any section not within a few words of the top of a page is a true test of your patience and determination not to use a sticky note instead. This same word-by-word navigation is also one way to access the built-in dictionary, as definitions of the word your cursor is next to appear at the bottom of the screen, though I imagine it takes far less time to open a real dictionary.

And on the Kindle, as with other eBook readers, the page turn is slow, making it impossible to “flip” through pages, and slow to get to a specific page (even when you enter the page number by hand). However, I realize that this is less a problem with Amazon's Linux-based platform and reasonably fast processor, and much more a problem with the inherent slowness of e-paper technology.

Still, the Kindle DX does introduce several improvements over the standard Kindle, starting with the larger screen. This screen allows much more text to be displayed than most other readers on the market. It becomes even more of an advantage with the very convenient text-size adjustment tool, allowing me to make the text smaller when I have my glasses, or larger when I don't. If only this worked on the PDF viewer, another new feature on the DX. The PDF viewer renders clearly, but is limited to being unzoomable, unless you take advantage of another feature of the DX: the accelerometer. This supposedly detects when you rotate the device and rotates the screen accordingly. With PDFs, this is essential, as the Kindle stretches the PDF so that the sides of the page touch the edges of the screen,meaning that it's zoomed in closer when the Kindle is rotated sideways.

However, I found that the accelerometer did not detect rotation when the device was lying flat, making it more of a gravity detector, and that it was very inconsistently sensitive: sometimes it required several tries to rotate the page, and sometimes little more than a passing breeze would set it off. I also found it mostly unnecessary. I could think of no real reason why I wanted to read the Kindle upside-down, especially since the buttons are placed only for right-side up reading.

Indeed, the accelerometer, along with the mp3 player and web browser, seem to be rather superfluous features thrown into the DX at the last minute. All of these features feel unfinished: the accelerometer needs adjustment, or perhaps the Kindle just needs a new accelerometer manufacturer; the web browser is bafflingly simplistic, in an era where you can access full, JavaScript-filled, CSS3 pages on the first-generation iPod Touch; and the mp3 player, while it does handle both variable-bitrate and standard formats, includes a bizarre and incomplete navigation system involving the keyboard (skip to the next track with Alt-F – but you can't skip back). It was wise of Amazon to place these features under an “Experimental” menu heading, but in my opinion they really shouldn't be here at all. E-paper is not a format fit for browsing the web at all, as many people are used to scanning very quickly through websites, not waiting forever for a page turn. And with only a hair over 3 gigabytes of storage, it seems silly to use the Kindle as your mp3 player, when you can buy a super-cheap standalone player with many times' the storage for a fraction of theKindle's hefty price tag.

In short, it seems that some of the features of the Kindle DX are included solely to justify its cost by making it look like an all-in-one portable device. The question then becomes, do they succeed?

In my humble opinion, they do not. The Kindle DX is trying a little too hard to be the iPhone of eBook readers, storming the electronics world with a must-have do-everything device. But where the iPhone actually offers a list of completely-implemented features geared to its platform in exchange for its premium price, the Kindle DX is, at its core, simply an eBook reader with a damn big screen, better-than-average PDF support, and a few other things tossed in as afterthoughts. What Amazon should focus on is bringing the price down and allowing more people to access what may very well be the future of books as we know them. The Kindle will never be an all-in-one device until the speed of e-paper is vastly improved, which may not be for quite some time.

Until then, Amazon has a very well-put-together eBook reader in the Kindle. The text renders clearly on the screen, images retain surprising clarity in greyscale, and, honestly, I didn't think that the text-to-speech feature was bad at all. If they focused their efforts on making the Kindle the very best reader out there, with less DRM and more intuitive interface designs, it would be a serious threat to dead-tree books. The Kindle DX won't convert those wed to real paper (especially the frugal ones), but for fans of eBook readers, the DX is the best choice in terms of readability, screen size, and most importantly, easy access to a large number of books.

The setting of Portal is relatively simple. You are a woman who wakes up trapped in a futuristic research center run by “Aperture Science Incorporated.” You are then given the “Portal gun” which allows you to shoot two connected portals creating between which travel is instantaneous.
